Oil Paint Medium Set (3 part)
5 parts Turpentine
1 part Venice Turpentine
1 part Stand Oi
2 parts Turpentine
2 parts Venice Turpentine
1 part Linseed Oil
2 parts Turpentine
1 part Venice Turpentine
2 parts sun thickened Linseed Oil
3-Part Medium Set for Fat-over-Lean painting
This is a good general purpose set of mediums that will build a fat-over-lean painting. These mediums will also add some glossiness to the oil paints. The “fat over lean” rule allows you to build a painting that is flexible, so over time there will be less cracking. I have seen recipes with more parts, which is fine, but I think 3 parts is a good place to get started with using DIY mediums.

Turpentine
Linseed Oil
Venice Turpentine
Stand Oil
Sun-thickened Linseed Oil
Example: Use #1 Medium for your underpainting, or to block in your basic elements. Then use the #2 medium to build up the colors and add details. This medium is used for most of your “intermediate” layers. Finally, use the #3 for all of your finer details and highlights.
