PROJECT NOTES:

For me, this project really began as an exercise in painting the transition from light to dark on the stones, using a very low light source.

The challenge is to create an interesting piece while trying to refine a technique.

Step 1
In my typical fashion, the piece is first underpainted using red acrylics. This cold over hot method is what really lights up the blue sky.

I masked this piece out and painted the background sky along with the basic landscape.

The first elements of the foreground have been added – it’s pretty apparent what is coming next. I will build upon the foreground to create elements of interest so the eye is encouraged to wander the entire canvas.

Work in Oils
I’m sorry for not posting more photos of the work on this one. I worked some long, intense days and nights and just ran out of gas before shooting pix.

I focused my efforts on this piece until I was satisfied with the slow transition of light to dark on the surfaces of the rocks.

In the foreground, I included areas of water and soft reflections of small details. The piece really seems to capture the cold crispness of the morning and the faintest approach of the sun.

The more I stare at this one, the more satisfied I am with the way it turned out.

The final piece has been added to the Gallery section. Let me know what you think!

See you again soon…
